History-The First Tee

Size:  First thing to consider, Artificial grass is expensive. I found that the minimum size of a par 3 green is 60 x 60 =3600 sq ft. For a chip and putt it was 30 x 30 = 900 sq ft. The price for artificial grass for the green was $.60 sq ft. up to $4. I went with the lowest price. I could always upgrade in the future. To make a chip and putt size (900 sq ft x .60) would be $540 just for the grass, not including any rough around the green, or material for underneath.

I understand why estimates to build a putting green of 2000 sq ft are $15-25 sq. ft.

I decided to make my green just under 720 sq ft. or 24 x30.

Build: Remove sod. Backfill with dirt to bring it above the ground level and angle so water will drain off. Where did I get the dirt? I dug out a big bunker.

Putting down the green

Putting down the green:  After finishing the sub-base and adding 2 layers of weed block, it rained and the bunker filled up and became a water hazard. I think it may turn into a small pond with a fountain one day.  I initially added blocks and stone to the top left as this was the highest part of the green and it needed support.

Rough around the edges

Adding the Rough:  I added taller grass around the perimeter. The least expensive I found was $1.88 sq ft.  I also changed the wall by replacing the stones with different blocks that looked nicer.

Tee boxes

Tee Boxes: I purchased a full size 5x5 range mat and a small 1x2 mat.  Then built a platform right outside my back door to put the range mat on.  Then using the left over turf, and the stones and blocks from the wall, I built an additional 4 tee boxes at varous distances.

Making it Better

I later decided to remove the wall completely and add more rough since the green was so small.  I also added a nice stone boarder around the perimeter.
